Haters gonna hate.
But sometimes, despite their stubborn nature, they will realize the error of their ways and set aside their pride to admit that they were indeed, wrong.
And so begins the tale of my first visit to Sandals.
When my brother and his fiance Melissa announced that they would be getting married in St. Lucia at the Sandals resort, I was excited (St. Lucia!) and a little bummed (Sandals). On the travel snob spectrum, I’m somewhere between people who bring large suitcases and those who only bring 3 paris of underwear. I pack everything I need into a carry on for domestic trips less than a week, and use a 55 L backpack for trips abroad (but still, at least 7 paris of underwear. I’m not insane…).
I prefer to skip the big American coach bus tour groups that drive by the landmarks, and instead rent a bicycle to visit the ones of most importance to me. I like to wander and take in a location’s everyday life rather than be herded around with other tourists. At the end of the day, this way of traveling is more enriching and eye-opening to me.
So yes, I was a Sandals hater. A four night trip to Sandals Grande Saint Lucian + flights cost us nearly as much as a two week trip to Europe. Think about that for a minute. Of course I wanted to go – my brother was getting married, for Pete’s sake – but the principle of it certainly had me in a grumpy mood the day we sent that payment off to the credit card company.
Our trip to Sandals Grande Saint Lucian came and went. And you know what? I loved it.
I decided that it’s okay to be on the travel snob spectrum and still enjoy a relaxing, pampering trip from time to time. Truly, a vacation.
Would I have loved to explore more of the island outside of the resort? Absolutely. I got a taste of it on our hour and a half drive from the airport in Vieux Fort to the resort on the far north of the island. Read about it here!

I make whimsical art for color-lovers and California dreamers. I'm based in Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C. where there are most decidedly no palm trees in sight.
