I’ve never fancied myself an event planner, but after the success of Celtic Crowns and Cocktails I feel as though I might have a knack for dabbling in event planning from time to time.
But only if they involve creating pretty things and drinking whiskey.
The day before St. Patrick’s Day, Catoctin Creek Distilling Co. was transformed into a floral workspace as Julie Abrera (of Beaumont House Design) brought in loads of flowers, tools, and ribbon for our group of 16 to create their own floral crowns. Every seat around the horseshoe shaped bar was filled with local women sipping cocktails and chatting with their old friends and new acquaintances as Julie gave instruction and Scott mixed up delicious creations like the Balsamic Berry Old Fashioned and the Jasmine Gin Fizz. My photo booth was adorned with a preserved hops vine of Julie’s which tied in perfectly with St. Patrick’s Day.
I had to bring the outside voice for a few minutes as I made introductions and thanked everyone for coming, and then I crawled back into my natural state of introvertedness behind the camera documenting the fun of the evening under the soft glow of the Edison bulbs that hang from the ceiling.
I’m not even sure what made my heart flutter more: overhearing guests say ‘I am having so much fun!’ during the event, or seeing the photos I took (and sent to all of the attendees!) being shared and turned into profile photos after the event. In a time where ‘pics or it didn’t happen’ is an actual state of mind, I think it’s beneficial to be able to attend an event and know that it’ll be documented for you so that your focus can be on enjoying yourself. Making sure attendees knew that the photos were included in their ticket price (along with all supplies plus two cocktails) was something we felt to be different from other similar events. The goal was literally just a fun evening spent at a local establishment hosted by a few fun vendors who wanted to get together and share their talents with people. As hosts, Julie, Scott, and I had a fantastic time and we hope our guests did, too.

I make whimsical art for color-lovers and California dreamers. I'm based in Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C. where there are most decidedly no palm trees in sight.
