When I opened my email one day toward the end of August and saw one from my business coach, Kristen Kalp, with the subject “Dammit I need you”, I had no idea what to expect inside. Need me? Intrigued, I opened her email to see that she’s asking to hire me for her sparkly new rebrand images. I was taken aback for awhile – Kristen’s a photographer herself, and through her years as a business coach and mentor she’s certainly amassed a large number of talented photographer friends and clients.
Gleefully (no seriously, I think I was shining from the inside) I responded to her saying that yes, yes I would be interested in taking her photos because she is an absolute personification of joy, and human joy would be a blast to (and I hate to use this word) capture.
Kristen shared a few Pinterest boards with her overall vision, which I was completely vibing on. Words like ‘sparkly‘, ‘ultra casual‘ ‘chill‘ and ‘play‘ peppered her emails, while one sentence in particular gave me everything I needed to know: “I like blur, I like play, I like mood. I’m less interested in how technically perfect a photo is and more interested in how it makes me feel. I like movement and light, ease and delight. Mood > sharpness, any day of the week.”
And so, on a gloriously warm October day, we met up in Asbury Park at the photogenic/hipster bait Asbury Hotel, littering the all-white room with loads of color and sparkle and confetti before walking to the beach for oceanside happy-place fun.
This post has SO. MANY. IMAGES. because I love how this shoot pulled together. Asking me to narrow them down is like asking me to narrow down my book collection. Not. Gonna. Happen.
Sit back and get your scrolling finger ready because this is a good one, promise.
Kristen’s rebrand is live and ready for you over at KristenKalp.com. Show her some love and make a point to check out her newest event, Brave, coming to Laguna Beach in April. Sign up (it’s only $69 down!) then tell her I sent you. High fives, champ.
I've pulled together my favorite and most-used art supplies + tools to make the process easy for you!
I make whimsical art for color-lovers and California dreamers. I'm based in Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C. where there are most decidedly no palm trees in sight.
